This municipality located on the Southeast of the Ourense province takes up a transition area amongst the foothills of the Queixa Mountains and the Massif of Cabeza de Manzaneda and the fertile valley of the Támega. The Nature Reserve of the “Invernadeiro” having its natural access through Castrelo do Val makes up the main charm of this municipality.

Its relief has great contrasts between the valley, where traditional growing as well as vineyards under the D.O. Monterrey are kept, and the rough mountain that is home to a considerable hunting and forest richness.

The Capital of the municipality is 3 km away from Verin that is the administrative centre in the region and is situated 54 Km away from the Ourense provincial capital (by the highway A52 Vigo-Madrid) The railway Ourense-Zamora having a railroad station at Campobecerros known as Castrelo do Val-Verín passes through this municipality.

Due to its stretch of land, 122.4 Km2, this municipality is one of the largest in the province, even though it has a very low population density (10.2 inhabitants per Km2), as the municipality only has 1,242 inhabitants) according to the National Statistics Institute (INE 2007) shared in 16 villages:
